The best computer internet security is knowledge!  You have a responsibility to take precautions to safe guard your computer from hackers and infections.

The first step is to understand what you are dealing with by becoming familiar with the basic terminology that goes along with computer internet security. So that being said ...

  1. Adware- sneaky programs that hide in your computer system which collect and report on your surfing interests in order to display pop-up advertisements.
  2. Hacker- individuals who are able to access your computer using evil programs you have downloaded without knowing so they can steal sensitive information or infect your computer.
  3. Key Logger- a special program in the form of a virus or spyware that creates files based on what you type on your keyboard and then automatically sends this information (i.e. credit card information, banking info, passwords, etc.) back to the person who created the key logger program.
  4. Malware- is a generalized term used to describe any type of infection that destroys computer settings, affects computer operation, or spies on personal information without permission. Types of malware include adware, spyware and viruses
  5. Phishing- a new kind of spam that involves sending out fake e-mails that appear to be from a legitimate online business that asks you to reply to a false website where you are asked to provide personal account information such as your credit card numbers resulting in identity theft.

  10. Worm- behaves very similar to a virus in the way it can damage your computer, however it can also automatically transfer to other computers by using your e-mail contact list and then sending fake messages out without your knowledge.
