- Adware- sneaky programs that hide in your computer system which collect and report on your surfing
interests in order to display pop-up advertisements.
- Hacker- individuals who are able to access your computer using evil programs you have downloaded
without knowing so they can steal sensitive information or infect your computer.
- Key Logger- a special program in the form of a virus or spyware that creates files based on what you
type on your keyboard and then automatically sends this information (i.e. credit card information, banking
info, passwords, etc.) back to the person who created the key logger program.
- Malware- is a generalized term used to describe any type of infection that destroys computer
settings, affects computer operation, or spies on personal information without permission. Types of
malware include adware, spyware and viruses
- Phishing- a new kind of spam that involves sending out fake e-mails that appear to be from a legitimate online
business that asks you to reply to a false website where you are asked to provide personal account information
such as your credit card numbers resulting in identity theft.
- Spam- a term used for electronic junk
mail that may often involve an e-mail scam used to get personal
information from you.
- Spyware- as the name suggests, this is a type of software that is used to spy on your computer
activities by installing and running without your knowledge. Information collected such as credit card data,
banking info, passwords, etc. is then sent back to the creator of the spyware program.
- Trojan Horse- a nasty program that appears harmless, but when activated by its creator, can
corrupt and destroy important data on your computer.
- Virus- is a program specifically written to infect your computer without your knowledge and then
corrupts data files, prevents your computer from operating properly, and can even spread to other computers if
someone downloads infected files from your computer.
- Worm- behaves very similar to a virus in the way it can damage your computer, however it can also
automatically transfer to other computers by using your e-mail contact list and then sending fake messages out
without your knowledge.
